從前從前⋯⋯喔不，很久很久「以後」，一個進步群體的精神領袖目連，夢見母親在地獄飽受懲罰，心神不寧的他拋下眾人創建的新生活，獨自前往地獄拯救母親。眾人不解他為何棄群體於不顧，更不解所謂地獄何來？誰又真會因地獄的存在而不敢犯罪？除了說謊貪婪和好吃懶做，浪費、冷漠、吝於分享、不關心公眾事務、不愛惜自然土地⋯⋯這些罪愆，地獄罰不罰？在拯救母親和自我救贖之間擺盪的目連，面對這不斷增生的質疑，又該做何解？
擅長以當代觀點重新詮釋經典文本的德國劇場知名編導瑞特貝格，是位編導雙料天才，曾獲班瑟墨與奈森劇作家獎的思辨實力派導演，這次受臺北藝術節之邀，聯合能歌能舞、從皮影到擊鼓都有一套的身聲劇場，在盛夏時節為臺北觀眾帶來一場徹底翻新、電音加乘的當代「目連戲」！跳脫「目連救母」故事的框架，穿上科幻童話的外衣，這一回，目連不只救援血親之母，更得救大地之母，想在資本主義全球化的時代當聖人，除了神通廣大、佛陀出馬，還需要什麼能力？進劇場和目連一起腦力激盪吧！
The play is a retelling of the well-known Buddhist tale “Mulian Rescues His Mother”, with our hero living in a future society. The task of saving mother’s soul becomes the burning glass, through which one finds focus to approach the global society at large. How do we define misconduct in the future and what would Buddha’s advice be like?
Given that Mulian lives in a community that seems to know how to deal with burnt-out individuals, overproduction, inequality and pollution; given that Mulian is already part of this new life, what is Mulian to do when Mother suffers in hell? His search for mother offers us some impressions on her way of life as well as on his, and we get know his new neighbors. Is it possible after all to break with habits, education and unexamined rules? Are we prepared to think of fundamental social changes?
Mulian Rescues Mother Earth is a Science-Fiction fairy tale. The production is the first collaboration of Sun Son Theatre, known for its musicality and physical energy, with German director/playwright Kevin Rittberger, stage designer Christoph Ebener, and Taiwanese electronic musician Cheer (KbN), opening up imagination for an alternative world with music, dance and theatre.
